Recordings and Planner

Manage your recordings

The Planner is available on all Sky+ and Sky+HD boxes, and offers two main features:

  1. Viewing and managing recordings.
  2. Viewing and managing reminders.

With the Planner, programmes are saved directly to your Sky+ or Sky+ HD box – you can even set to record an entire series in one go. And with Remote Record, you don't even need to be in front of the TV when deciding what to watch later.

It’s easier than ever to activate Remote Record using the Sky Service app. Download it now for free*.

*App features and functions vary by platform/device. Compatible device required. See iTunes App Store or Google Play Store. Most features use 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi (charges may apply).

Sky+/Sky+HD boxes

  • Set up a recording

To set up a recording, find a programme by pressing tv guide and searching the listings, or through the Now, Next & Later banner, then press the record button. If the programme is part of a series, you will be given an option to Record Once or Record Series. Reminders work the same way, but instead of recording the programme, this option will display a message on your TV screen just before the programme starts.

All of your planned reminders and recordings are listed in your Planner, as well as programmes you've already recorded,. To view all your recorded programmes, press tv guide then select Planner. You'll see your recordings and a thin bar with a percentage figure, indicating how much disk space is available for future recordings.

  • How many programmes can I record at the same time?

Check the back of your Sky box for Dish Input 1 and Dish Input 2.

If there are cables attached to both of these ports:

    • You’ll be able to record two shows at the same time.
    • If you try to record a third show, you’ll see a message onscreen asking whether you’d like to cancel one of your recordings in progress.
    • If you’re recording two shows at the same time, you’ll be able to watch a third show only if it’s saved to your Planner or downloading either through Sky TV on demand (including Catch Up TV), or Sky Store.
    • If there’s a single cable, or you only have one Dish Input port:
    • You’ll be able to record one show at a time.
    • If you try to record a second show, you’ll see a message onscreen asking whether you’d like to cancel your recording in progress.
    • If you’re recording a show, you’ll be able to watch another, only if it’s saved to your Planner or downloading either through Sky TV on demand (including Catch Up TV), or Sky Store.

  • Browsing recordings

    1. In your Planner, use the left/right arrow buttons on your Sky remote to highlight the All tab.
    2. Press select or the down arrow button.
    3. Press the up/down arrow buttons to scroll through the list of recordings.
    4. Press the ch +/- buttons to move up and down pages of recordings.
    5. Press the i button to see more information about a selected recording, such as how long it is and how much disk space it uses.

You'll see your recordings listed in date order, with the most recent at the top. It's the same for all the tabs in your Planner, except Downloads, which shows your queue of programmes that are scheduled to download.

You can see your recordings in alphabetical order by pressing the green button to sort from A-Z.

On some older Sky+ HD boxes you'll find an A-Z tab in the Planner menu. Go to this tab to order all recordings and reminders alphabetically. Highlight any programme in the A-Z list and you'll then be able to jump through the list by using the Sky remote to enter the first letter of the programme. For example, to get to Boardwalk Empire, press the button twice to jump to the "B" section of the list. Press the back up button to delete a letter and then enter another one.

  • Scheduled recordings and reminders

In the Scheduled tab you can check all your recordings for the next seven days, as well as reminders and scheduled downloads.

You’ll also be able to see all of your Smart Series Links for upcoming series, which you can Lock, Delete or Keep.

  • Playing back a recording

To watch a programme you've recorded, highlight it in the Planner and press select. You can choose a starting point for viewing. Previously viewed recordings will remember the point at which viewing stopped, allowing you to pick up where you left off. To choose a specific point in the recording to start viewing, type in a number of minutes. After you have finished viewing the recording, press back up to return to the Planner, or sky to return to live TV.

  • Manual recordings

Rather than record a specific programme, you can set the Planner to record a particular channel for a defined period. This can be useful for recording parts of very long broadcasts or when it's likely that a broadcast will overrun for a long period. Here's how to add a manual record to the Planner:

    1. Press services on your Sky remote to highlight the Options menu.
    2. Press select and you'll see the Sky+ Setup menu highlighted.
    3. Press the left/right arrows to highlight Man Rec.
    4. Press select to highlight the Channel Number and Channel Name items.
    5. Type in the desired channel number, or press the left/right arrow buttons to cycle through the available channels.
    6. Press the down arrow button to highlight Day.
    7. Press the left/right arrow buttons to select the day of recording. The default option is Today. You may select to record up to six days in advance.
    8. Press the down arrow button to highlight Start Time.
    9. Press the number buttons to enter the start time.
    10. Press the left/right arrow buttons to switch between AM and PM.
    11. Press the down arrow button to highlight End Time.
    12. Press the number buttons to enter the end time.
    13. Press the left/right arrow buttons to switch between AM and PM.
    14. Press the down arrow button to highlight Frequency.
    15. Press the left/right arrow buttons to select the frequency of the recording. The default option is Once, which is for one-off recordings.
    16. Press the yellow button to add the manual recording to the Planner.

When looking at the manual recording in the Planner, you will see the recording titled with the date and time. When trying to watch a manual recording in the Planner, you will be asked to enter your Sky TV PIN. This applies to all manual recordings, whatever their content.

  • Recording radio broadcasts

The Planner lets you record radio broadcasts as manual recordings.

    1. Using the Sky remote, enter the channel number of the radio station you'd like to record, e.g. 0101 for Radio 1.
    2. Press the record button. You'll see the Manual Rec page, with the Channel Number and Channel Name items already filled in.
    3. Press the down arrow button to highlight Day.
    4. Press the left/right arrow buttons to select the day of recording. The default option is Today. You may select to record up to six days in advance.
    5. Press the down arrow button to highlight Start Time.
    6. Press the number buttons to enter the start time.
    7. Press the left/right arrow buttons to switch between AM and PM.
    8. Press the down arrow button to highlight End Time.
    9. Press the number buttons to enter the end time.
    10. Press the left/right arrow buttons to switch between AM and PM.
    11. Press the down arrow button to highlight Frequency.
    12. Press the left/right arrow buttons to select the frequency of the recording. The default option is Once, which is for one-off recordings.

  • Deleting recordings

To delete a recording from your Planner use the up/down arrow buttons to highlight the programme you want to delete and press the yellow button to Delete.

To delete an entire Series Stack, highlight the stack and press the yellow button to Delete All. You’ll be given the choice to Delete All Viewed or Delete All. You’ll also be asked to confirm that you want the programmes to be deleted.

If some of the programmes you’ve chosen to delete are set to Keep and you have PIN Protect Kept Programmes switched on, you’ll need to enter your PIN to delete the programmes.

  • Can I restore recordings I've deleted?

Yes. To restore a recently deleted recording to the Planner:

    1. In your Planner menu, use the left/right arrows to highlight the Deleted tab.
    2. Press select.
    3. Press the up/down arrows to highlight the deleted recording you wish to restore.
    4. Press the green button.
    5. Repeat the process for any other recordings you wish to restore.

Restored recordings will disappear from the Deleted tab and reappear in the All tab, and can now be watched again as usual.

Note: The Deleted tab's yellow button allows you to permanently delete recordings, but doing so does not change the percentage of available disk space in the Planner. This is because the Planner calculates available disk space on the assumption that deleted recordings will be removed automatically when space is required for new recordings.
