Get emails on your Mac client

If you access Sky Yahoo Mail on a Mac client this article will help you to check if you are using POP or IMAP with the correct settings as well as how to set up access using the Sky POP/IMAP settings.

  • Apple Mail

    How do I check if I am using the correct POP or IMAP settings?

    1. In Apple Mail, choose Mail then Preferences.
    2. Click on the Accounts icon in the toolbar at the top of the Mail Preferences window.
    3. In the Accounts list in the Mail Preferences window, click on your Sky Yahoo Mail account.
    4. In the information displayed, check the Incoming Mail Server field.

    • If it reads “pop.tools.sky.com” or “imap.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using the correct Sky settings and do not need to do anything else.
    • If it reads “imap.gmail.com”, or “pop.gmail.com” you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using the Google settings which will not work following Sky Email’s switchover to Sky Yahoo Mail. You will need to set up an email account using the Sky settings instead. Use the instructions below to set up a Sky Yahoo Mail account on Apple Mail.

    Set up a Sky Yahoo Mail account on Apple Mail

    1. From the File menu, choose Add Account.
    2. On the Add Account screen, enter your full name, Sky Yahoo Mail address and your Sky Yahoo Mail password and click Continue.
    3. Enter the settings below and click Continue:

      Account Type: IMAP if using IMAP or POP3 if using POP
      Description: A name for your account
      Incoming Mail Server: imap.tools.sky.com if using IMAP, or pop.tools.sky.com if using POP3
      Username: Your Sky Yahoo Mail address
      Password: Your Sky Yahoo Mail account password
    4. Tick the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) option and click Continue.
    5. Enter the settings below:

      Description: A name for your account
      Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.tools.sky.com
      Username: Your Sky Yahoo Mail address
      Password: Your Sky Yahoo Mail account password
      Make sure the Use Authentication box is ticked
    6. Click Continue.
    7. Tick the User Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) option and click Continue.
    8. Verify the settings are correct and click Create.

      Account Summary

    You can test the account by sending an email to yourself. If this doesn't work, go back to step 2 and try again.

    Check your port numbers and email settings

    It is also worth checking you have the correct port numbers set up, to ensure you do not have any difficulties sending/receiving emails.

    1. From Preferences, click on the Accounts icon in the toolbar at the top of the Mail Preferences window.
    2. In the Accounts list in the Mail Preferences window, click on your Sky Yahoo Mail account.
    3. Click Advanced.
    4. Select Use Custom Port box and enter 465 in the adjacent box.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Select Advanced Tab.
    7. The Port should be:

      For IMAP enter 993.
      For POP3 enter 995.

    8. Make sure Use SSL has a tick next to it.
    9. Uncheck Remove copy from server after retrieving message.
    10. You can test the account by sending an email to yourself.
  • Outlook 2011

    How do I check if I am using POP or IMAP?

    1. In Outlook 2011, select Tools followed by Accounts.
    2. Select your Sky Yahoo Mail account and click Edit.
    3. On the account information window, check the Incoming server field.

    • If it reads “pop.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using POP and therefore do not need to change any settings.
    • If it reads “imap.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using IMAP. You will need to set up a POP account instead. Use the instructions below to set up a POP account in Outlook 2011.
    • If it reads “imap.gmail.com”, or “pop.gmail.com” you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using the Google settings which will not work following Sky Email’s switchover to Sky Yahoo Mail. You will need to set up a POP account instead. Use the instructions below to set up a POP account in Outlook 2011.

    Set up a POP account in Outlook 2011

    1. In Outlook 2011, select Tools followed by Accounts.
    2. Click the drop down arrow next to the [+] button and select E-mail.
    3. Enter the following Account details:

      E-mail Address: Your Sky Yahoo Mail address
      Password: Your Sky Yahoo Mail account password
      Username: Your Sky Yahoo Mail address again
      Type: POP
      Incoming server: pop.tools.sky.com, with port number 995
      Outgoing server: smtp.tools.sky.com, with port number 465
      Tick Override default port and Use SSL to connect
    4. Click Add Account. Make sure the information shown is correct then click More Options.

    5. Make sure the Authentication is set to Username and Password.
    6. Make sure the full Sky Yahoo Mail address has been entered for the User name and that the password has been entered.
    7. Click OK and close the Accounts page.
    8. To ensure the account is working correctly click Send/Receive at the top of the page. Any unread emails should now download to your Outlook Inbox.

    If any error message is received go back to step 3 and check the above information has been correctly entered.
