Get emails on your Windows desktop client

If you access Sky Yahoo Mail on a Windows desktop client, this article will help you to check if you are using POP or IMAP as well as how to set up access using the correct settings.

  • 2003

    Microsoft Outlook 2003

    How do I check if I am using POP or IMAP?

    1. In Outlook 2003, select Tools followed by Email Accounts.
    2. Select your Sky Yahoo Mail account and click Change.
    3. You will now see the Internet E-mail Settings screen. On this screen, check the “Incoming mail server” field.

      Internet email settings
    • If it reads “pop.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using POP and therefore do not need to change any settings.
    • If it reads “imap.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using IMAP. You will need to set up a POP account instead. Use the instructions below to set up a POP account in Outlook 2003.
    • If it reads “imap.gmail.com”, or “pop.gmail.com” you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using the Google settings which will not work following Sky Email’s switchover to Sky Yahoo Mail. You will need to set up a POP account using Sky settings instead. Use the instructions below to set up a POP account in Outlook 2003.

    Set up a POP account in Outlook 2003

    1. Select Tools followed by E-mail accounts.
    2. Select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.
    3. Select POP3 and click Next.
    4. Add the Internet E-mail Settings using the following details:

      Your Name: Your first and last name
      E-mail Address: Your Sky Yahoo Mail address
      User Name: Your Sky Yahoo Mail address again
      Password: Your Sky Yahoo Mail account password
      Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.tools.sky.com
      Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.tools.sky.com

      Do not click "Logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)"
    5. Click More Settings.

      Select the Outgoing Server tab and tick the My Outgoing Server requires authentication check box. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
    6. Select the Advanced tab and make sure the check box This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) is selected in both the incoming and outgoing server sections.
      This will change the default number in the box from 110 to 995 for POP.
    7. Enter 465 in the box provided for Outgoing server (SMTP) and click OK.
    8. Under the Delivery section of this tab, make sure that Leave a copy of messages on the server is checked.

      Double check the information is correct and click Next.

      Internet email settings

      If this is incorrect, go back to step 4.
    9. The account has now been created and a congratulations message will appear. Click Finish.
    10. To ensure the account is working correctly click Send/Receive.
  • 2007

    Microsoft Outlook 2007

    How do I check if I am using POP or IMAP?

    1. In Outlook 2007, select Tools followed by Email Accounts.
    2. Select your Sky Yahoo Mail account and click Change.
    3. You will now see the Internet E-mail Settings screen. On this screen, check the “Incoming mail server” field.

    • If it reads “pop.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using POP and therefore do not need to change any settings.

    1. Select Tools followed by Account Settings.
    2. Select the Email tab and click New.

    2. Select the Email tab and then Change.
    3. You will now see the Internet E-mail Settings screen. On this screen, check the “Incoming mail server” field.

    Setting up a POP account in Outlook 2010

    1. Select File followed by Info. Click on Account Settings followed by Account Settings.
    2. Select the Email tab and click New.
    3. Select Manually Configure Server Settings and click Next.
    4. Select Internet E-mail and click Next.
    5. Add the Internet E-mail Settings using the following details:

      Your Name: Your first and last name
      E-mail Address: Your Sky Yahoo Mail address

    9. Ensure the box alongside "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" is ticked. Make sure the incoming Server port is set to 995. Select SSL from the Use the following type of encrypted connection drop down menu. Enter 465 in the box provided for Outgoing server (SMTP) and click OK.
    10. Under the Delivery section of this tab, make sure that Leave a copy of messages on the server is checked.

      Double check the information is correct and then click Next.

      If incorrect, go back to step 5.
    11. The account has now been created and a congratulations message will appear. Click Finish followed by Close.
    12. To ensure the account is working correctly click Send/Receive All Folders.
  • Express

    Microsoft Outlook Express

    How do I check if I am using POP or IMAP?

    1. In Outlook Express, select Tools followed by Accounts.
    2. Select the Mail tab. Highlight your sky.com account from the list shown and click Properties.
    3. This will open the Properties window. Select the Servers tab and check the Incoming mail field.

    • If it reads “pop.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using POP and therefore do not need to change any settings.
    • If it reads “imap.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using IMAP. You will need to set up a POP account instead. Use the instructions below to set up a POP account in Outlook Express.
    • If it reads “imap.gmail.com”, or “pop.gmail.com” you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using the Google settings which will not work following Sky Email’s switchover to Sky Yahoo Mail. You will need to set up a POP account instead. Use the instructions below to set up a POP account in Outlook Express.

    Set up a POP account in Outlook Express

    1. In Outlook Express, select Tools followed by Accounts.
    2. Go to the Mail tab and from the Add menu, select Mail.
    3. Enter your name in the Display Name field and click Next.
    4. Enter your full Sky Yahoo Mail address in the E-mail address field and click Next.
    5. Select POP3 from the drop down and enter the following details, then click Next:

      Incoming mail: pop.tools.sky.com
      Outgoing mail: smtp.tools.sky.com
    6. Enter your full Sky Yahoo Mail address in the Account Name field and your password in the Password field.

      If you want Outlook Express to remember the password, then make sure the check box is selected.

      Do not tick "Log on using Secure Password Authentication(SPA)".

    7. Click Next and then Finish.
    8. On the Mail tab, select the account you just created and then click Properties. Click on the newly created account and select Properties.
    9. Select the Servers tab and make sure the following details are shown:

      POP is set as the incoming mail server.
      The incoming mail server is pop.tools.sky.com.
      The Outgoing Mail server is smtp.tools.sky.com.
      The full Sky Yahoo Mail address is in the Account Name field.
      Make sure Logon using Secure Password Authentication is not ticked.
      Tick the box My server requires authentication.

    10. Click Settings and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Click OK.
    11. Select the Advanced tab and make sure the following details are entered:

      Select the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box within both the Outgoing and Incoming mail sections.
      Make sure the Outgoing server port is set to 465
      Make sure the Incoming Server port is set to 995 for POP

    12. Under the Delivery section of this tab, make sure that Leave a copy of messages on the server is checked. Click Apply followed by OK.
    13. Click Close. To ensure the account is working correctly click Send/Receive.

    Any unread emails should then download automatically.

    If any error message is received go back to step 1 to make sure the information has been correctly entered.

  • Mail

    Windows Mail

    How do I check if I am using POP or IMAP?

    1. In Windows Mail, select Tools followed by Accounts.
    2. Select your Sky Yahoo Mail account and click Properties.
    3. You will now see the Properties screen. Select the Servers tab and check the Incoming mail field.

    • If it reads “pop.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using POP and therefore do not need to change any settings.

    Set up a POP account in Windows Mail

    1. Select Tools followed by Accounts.
    2. Select Add.
    3. Select E-mail Account and click Next. Enter your name and click Next.
    4. Enter your Sky Yahoo Mail address and click Next.
    5. On the next screen enter the following information and then click Next:

      Incoming e-mail server type: POP3
      Incoming mail (POP) or (IMAP) server: pop.tools.sky.com
      Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name: smtp.tools.sky.com

    6. In the E-mail username field enter your full Sky Yahoo Mail address and your password into the Password field. Click Next.
    7. In the Congratulations prompt window, tick the box for Do not download my e-mail at this time and click Finish.
    8. To make the account has been set up correctly, select Tools and then Accounts. Select the newly created account and then select Properties.
    9. Select the Servers tab and make sure that:

      The server names are correct (see step 5 above).
      The full email address is displayed in the E-mail username field.
      The tick box for Login using Secure Password Authentication is not ticked.
      Tick the box for My server requires authentication and then click Settings.
    10. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server and click OK.
    11. Select the Advanced tab and make sure that:

      This server requires a secure connection (SSL) has been ticked for the Outgoing mail (SMTP) and that 465 is in the box. For example, If the box needs to be ticked, make sure this is ticked before entering 465 in the box.

      This server requires a secure connection (SSL) has been ticked for the Incoming mail.
    12. Under the Delivery section of this tab, make sure that Leave a copy of messages on the server is checked. Click Apply and then OK.
    13. Click Close. To ensure the account is working correctly click Send/Receive.

    Any unread emails should then download automatically.

    If any error message is received, go back to step 1 to make sure the information has been correctly entered.

  • Live Mail

    Windows Live Mail

    How do I check if I am using POP or IMAP?

    1. In Windows Live Mail, right click on your Sky Yahoo Mail account and select Properties.
    2. In the Properties window, select the Servers tab and check the Incoming mail field.

    • If it reads “pop.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using POP and therefore do not need to change any settings.
    • If it reads “imap.tools.sky.com”, you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using IMAP. You will need to set up a POP account instead. Use the instructions below to set up a POP account in Windows Live Mail.
    • If it reads “imap.gmail.com”, or “pop.gmail.com” you are accessing Sky Yahoo Mail using the Google settings which will not work following Sky Email’s switchover to Sky Yahoo Mail. You will need to set up a POP account instead. Use the instructions below to set up a POP account in Windows Live Mail.

    Set up a POP account in Windows Live Mail

    1. Select the Accounts tab and then the Email icon.
    2. Enter the following information:

      E-mail address: Full Sky Yahoo Mail address
      Password: Your Sky Yahoo Mail password.
      Display Name: Your name

      Tick the box Manually configure server settings and then click Next
    3. Enter the following Server settings:

      Select the account type as POP, the incoming server is pop.tools.sky.com
      Make sure the Incoming Server port is set to 995 for POP.
      Tick the box for Requires a secure connection (SSL).
      Make sure the Authenticate using drop down menu is set to Clear text.
      Enter the outgoing server smtp.tools.sky.com.
      Make sure the Outgoing Server port is set to 465.

      Tick both boxes for Requires a secure connection (SSL) and Requires Authentication.
    4. Click Next and then Finish.
    5. To the left of the page, right click on the newly created account and select Properties.
    6. Select the Servers tab and make sure the following settings are correct:

      Account properties

      The full Sky Yahoo Mail address in the Email Username field.
      The option Log on using clear text authentication is selected.
      The My server requires authentication is selected.
    7. Click the Settings button next to My server requires authentication.
    8. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server and click OK.
    9. Under the Delivery section of this tab, make sure that Leave a copy of messages on the server is checked.
    10. Click the Apply button and then OK.

    The account has now been created. Any unread emails should then download automatically.

    If any error message is received go back to step 2 to make sure the information has been correctly entered.
