Sky+ app on Apple devices

Sky+ app on iPad

With the Sky+ app on your iPhone or iPad, you can set your Sky+ box to record a show or series that’s on over the next seven days, look through your favourite channels, search for shows and check out recommendations. If you have a Sky+HD box, you can also use your iPhone or iPad as a remote control, browse your Planner and download On Demand programmes to your Sky+HD box.

You can download the app through the App Store if you're in the UK or Republic of Ireland (iOS 5 or higher required). Once downloaded, the app can be used to access the TV Guide and make Remote Record requests anywhere you can get a 3G, 4G or wireless connection.

You'll need your Sky iD to get started with the Sky+app on your Apple device. If you've forgotten your Sky iD details, use the forgotten username or forgotten password pages.

If you are having problems with Remote Record, read our Remote Record troubleshooting article.

Setting up Sky+ app enhanced features on iPhone and iPad

You'll need a compatible Sky+HD box with the new Sky Guide to use the enhanced Sky+ app features. If your box is compatible, ensure it is connected to your broadband router using either an Ethernet cable or a Wireless Connector.

Once your Sky+HD box is connected and you've downloaded the Sky+app, you'll need to connect your iPhone or iPad to the same Wi-Fi network as your Sky+HD box. You can find help on connecting your iPhone or iPad by reading our Connect an Apple device to Sky Broadband article.

The Sky+ app will search for any Sky+HD boxes on your broadband network and display the contents of your Planner once the box is found. You’ll be able to download On Demand programmes to your Sky+HD box and be able to use your device as a remote control. These features are only available when the iPhone or iPad are on the same broadband network as the Sky+HD box.

When you’re not at home, you’ll still be able to browse the TV Guide, On Demand listings and send Remote Record requests – you can also use these features if you have a white Sky+ box.

Checking your Sky+HD box is compatible with the enhanced Sky+ app

With the exception of Thomson models, all Sky+HD boxes should now have the new Sky Guide. If you don’t have the new Sky Guide, first check to see if you have a compatible Sky+HD box model.

  1. Using your Sky remote, press the services button.
  2. Press the left/right arrow buttons to highlight Settings.
  3. Press the left/right arrow buttons to highlight System Details.
  4. Note the Version Number.

Your Sky+HD box is compatible if you have a version number starting with any of the following: 4F31, 4F30, 9730 and 9F30. If you have one of the Sky+HD boxes above but don’t have the new Sky Guide, then you can get it by doing a manual software update using the buttons on the front panel/top panel of your box:

  1. Put your Sky+HD box into standby by pressing the power button on your Sky remote.
  2. Unplug your box or switch it off at the mains.
  3. Press and hold the back up button on the Sky+HD box.
  4. Turn the Sky+HD box back on while keeping your finger pressed down on back up.
  5. When the four lights on the front of your Sky+HD box light up, release the back up button.
  6. A message will appear on the screen stating "updating system software".
  7. Wait until the Sky+HD box goes into standby (can be up to 10 minutes).
  8. Once your box has entered standby mode, your box will be ready for you to turn on.

If you have 4E30 version number, your Sky+HD box is a Thomson model and unfortunately, we are not updating this box with the new Sky Guide.

Using the remote control feature

Turn off conflicting apps

Examples of apps that are known to conflict with the Sky+ app are AirPlay, ZappoTV HD and 8player. Other "UPnP" apps may conflict with the Sky+ app. To temporarily turn off apps:

  1. Double-tap the Home button on your iPad or iPhone to see a list of running apps.
  2. Press and hold on any app in the list until the apps start to shake.
  3. Tap an app to close it down.

Sky+HD box and Planner information privacy

Any iPad or iPhone connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Sky+HD box will be able to access your Planner. It's important to keep the wireless network password for your broadband router as secure as possible to prevent unauthorised access to your network.
